March 15, 2026 — Day 15 War Desk
President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States is "not yet prepared" to make a deal with Iran to end the two-week-old war — even as Tehran has privately signaled it is ready to negotiate. In a wide-ranging, nearly 30-minute phone interview with NBC News, Trump announced that U.S. strikes had "totally demolished" Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal, casually added the U.S. "may hit it a few more times just for fun," called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and other nations to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz, and expressed surprise that Iran had decided to attack neighboring Middle Eastern countries after the war began.
Fresh strikes pounded the region simultaneously, with Kuwait International Airport suffering significant damage, Isfahan hit by Israeli missiles, Dubai intercepting nine ballistic missiles and 33 drones in a single day, and Formula 1 officially cancelling its Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix races. Here is the full Day 15 breakdown.
Trump: 'Iran Wants a Deal — But the Terms Aren't Good Enough Yet'
Asked directly by NBC News whether the United States was prepared to reach a ceasefire agreement with Iran, Trump was blunt: "Iran wants to make a deal, and I don't want to make it because the terms aren't good enough yet."
He declined to specify what terms would be acceptable, saying only that any agreement would have to be "very solid." He also said he was not ready to reveal what he wants from any eventual deal.
The statement contradicts the public posture Iran has presented. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking to media on Saturday, said Iran had never asked for a ceasefire — directly contradicting Trump's claim that Tehran is seeking negotiations. Araghchi said Iran was "close to reach a deal" before the war began and was ready to make significant concessions — but denied that Iran was the one now reaching out for terms.
"This is an imposed war against us," Araghchi said. "We were close to reach a deal. That is the reality."
The conflicting accounts underscore a fundamental confusion at the heart of the conflict: neither side can agree on who is asking for what — or what an acceptable end state even looks like. Former State Department negotiator Richard Nephew warned: "It could be fatal. The U.S. misjudged Iran's response to strikes."
Kharg Island Destroyed — 'We May Hit It a Few More Times Just for Fun'
One of the war's most economically consequential strikes came Saturday when Trump confirmed the United States had struck Kharg Island — Iran's main crude oil export terminal, located in the northern Persian Gulf, which handles approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes on Kharg Island destroyed more than 90 military targets, including missile facilities. CENTCOM said oil infrastructure was deliberately preserved — a sign the U.S. does not want to permanently destroy Iran's future oil production capacity, likely to avoid a permanent spike in global oil prices.
Trump, however, was far more casual about the strike than CENTCOM's measured statement suggested. "We totally demolished Kharg Island. The main oil — everything — we may hit it a few more times just for fun," he told NBC News.
The "just for fun" comment — made while discussing the deaths of thousands of people and the destruction of a nation's primary economic asset — immediately went viral, drawing condemnation from Arab governments, European allies, and human rights organizations.
Trump Calls on the World: 'China, France, Japan, South Korea, UK — Send Warships'
In a striking escalation of diplomatic pressure, Trump publicly called on multiple world powers to send warships to the Middle East to help the United States secure the Strait of Hormuz.
"Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others will send ships to the region," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. He argued that all of these nations benefit from the free flow of oil through the Strait and should share the burden of protecting it.
The responses were mixed at best:
- 🇰🇷 South Korea said it would make a decision after "careful review."
- 🇯🇵 Japan said any decision to dispatch naval vessels would face "high hurdles" under its pacifist constitution.
- 🇨🇳 China has not publicly responded — and is widely seen as Iran's key economic partner, making a Chinese warship escort politically inconceivable.
- 🇫🇷 France has not committed.
- 🇬🇧 UK has not committed.
Defense expert Rosemary Kelanic of Defense Priorities warned that escorting ships through the Strait is "a very dangerous mission" because Iran occupies the high ground across the northern side of the narrow waterway, allowing it to launch drones, missiles, and shore-based attacks with almost no warning time. "Because they can attack from the shore, there's just not enough reaction time to prevent ships from getting struck," she said.
Kuwait Airport Hit — Day 15 Strikes Across the Region
Day 15 of the conflict saw a dramatic expansion of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure across the Gulf:
Kuwait: Kuwait International Airport suffered significant damage after an Iranian strike. It marked the first confirmed hit on a major international civilian airport in the conflict — a significant escalation that immediately triggered emergency responses from airlines and aviation authorities worldwide. Qatar Airways, Emirates, and other carriers operating through Kuwait suspended services and began emergency rerouting.
UAE / Dubai: UAE authorities confirmed that Dubai's defense systems intercepted 9 ballistic missiles and 33 unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Iran on Saturday alone — the single largest barrage directed at the UAE since the conflict began. A fire broke out at a key UAE oil hub at the port of Fujairah when debris fell as a drone was intercepted. Dubai's defense ministry described the attacks as "a deliberate targeting of civilian and economic infrastructure."
Saudi Arabia: Saudi defense authorities confirmed Sunday that the kingdom intercepted 10 drones over Riyadh and the Eastern Province — home to the world's largest oil reserves and Aramco's critical Abqaiq processing facility.
Qatar: Officials confirmed Qatar "successfully" intercepted 4 ballistic missiles and several drones launched from Iran on Saturday.
Israel: Munitions fell at several locations in central Israel, Israeli authorities confirmed. Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israeli cities continued for the 15th consecutive day.
Isfahan, Iran: Israeli strikes targeted multiple locations in Iran's Isfahan city, with video geolocated by CNN showing thick smoke rising over the city. Isfahan is home to some of Iran's most important military and industrial facilities — as well as UNESCO World Heritage Sites that have already been damaged during the conflict.
Lebanon / Beirut: At least one person was killed when a residential building was struck in southern Lebanon. Israel's military said it conducted strikes on Hezbollah financial infrastructure in Beirut, while Hezbollah continued firing rockets into northern Israel.
USS Nimitz Extended: America's Largest Warship Stays on Duty
In a significant military development, the U.S. Navy announced that the USS Nimitz — one of the world's largest warships and a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that had been set for decommissioning in May 2026 — will have its service life extended to March 2027.
"USS Nimitz's (CVN 68) service life has since been extended to March 2027. Accordingly, the U.S. Navy plans to inactivate the ship in 2027," a Navy official told CNN.
The extension is a direct result of the Iran war and the need to maintain maximum naval firepower in the Middle East region. The Nimitz has been stationed off the coast of San Diego and has not yet been redeployed to the Middle East theater.
Ukraine Sends Drone Defense Teams to Three Gulf Nations
In one of the war's most unexpected diplomatic developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine has sent expert teams to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to share its hard-won expertise in intercepting Iranian-made "Shahed" drones — the same drones Russia has been using against Ukrainian cities for the past three years and that Iran is now deploying against Gulf states.
Trump responded to news of Zelenskyy's outreach by attacking the Ukrainian president — calling him "far more difficult to make a deal with" than Russian President Vladimir Putin over efforts to end the Ukraine war. Trump also acknowledged Russia may be sharing intelligence with Iran about the location of U.S. forces, saying: "Russia is perhaps giving information, perhaps they're not."
Iran's response to Ukraine's Gulf deployment was direct. An Iranian politician declared that Ukraine was "a legitimate and lawful target" for Iran because of its decision to assist Gulf nations in defending against Iranian drones.
Formula 1 Cancels Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
In a significant cultural and economic blow to the Gulf region, Formula 1 officially cancelled its Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix races that had been scheduled for April 2026.
The announcement was made in Shanghai ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. "Due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East region, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix will not take place in April," F1 and its governing body FIA said. "While several alternatives were considered, it was ultimately decided that no substitutions will be made in April."
Both countries have been struck repeatedly since Iran began retaliating against U.S. and Israeli allies. The cancellation follows a wider pattern of global sporting and cultural events being affected by the conflict — Iran's Paralympic team has also been forced to withdraw from the Milan 2026 Winter Paralympics because Iranian athletes cannot travel safely.
Trump 'Surprised' Iran Attacked Gulf Neighbors — But Are Those Countries?
Trump told NBC News he was "surprised" that Iran decided to attack neighboring Gulf countries — including the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain — after the U.S. and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury.
"I was very surprised," Trump said. "That was the biggest surprise I had of this whole thing."
The statement was immediately noted by foreign policy analysts, who pointed out that Iran's strategy of attacking Gulf states — which host U.S. military bases and support the U.S. war effort — had been widely predicted by Middle East experts and was explicitly warned about in intelligence assessments before the war began. A former State Department official told CNN: "The U.S. misjudged Iran's response to strikes. It could be fatal."
Trump simultaneously praised the Gulf states for their resilience: "The United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been terrific. They got shot at unnecessarily."

What Comes Next?
With Trump refusing to deal, Iran refusing to surrender, and every Gulf state now under fire, Day 16 of Operation Epic Fury begins with no end in sight. The International Crisis Group warned the war is "more likely to prove protracted and unpredictable than decision-makers in Washington anticipated."
The next major flashpoint is the Strait of Hormuz — where Iran has vowed to keep the waterway closed and the U.S. has promised to reopen it. Whether Trump can persuade allies to send warships — and whether those warships can withstand Iran's shore-based attacks — may determine the war's economic trajectory as much as any military strike.
Iran will determine the end of this war, the IRGC insists. Trump says he'll know when it's over "when I feel it in my bones." The bombs are still falling.
