March 21–22, 2026 — BREAKING — Day 22 of Operation Epic Fury
President Donald Trump dramatically escalated the U.S.-Iran war on Saturday night — posting an all-caps ultimatum on Truth Social threatening to "hit and obliterate" Iran's power plants if Tehran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. The threat — posted at 7:44 p.m. ET Saturday — means Iran's deadline expires at 7:44 p.m. ET Monday (3:14 a.m. Tuesday in Tehran). Meanwhile, Iranian missiles struck the Israeli city of Dimona — home to Israel's nuclear research center — and targeted the U.S.-UK base at Diego Garcia, demonstrating a long-range strike capability that alarmed Western military planners. Oil hit $112.19 per barrel. Here is the complete Day 22 breakdown.
🚨 Trump's 48-Hour Ultimatum: The Full Post
Trump posted at 7:44 p.m. ET on Saturday: "If Iran doesn't FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!"
The comments from Trump marked a dramatic escalation in the US president's rhetoric about the strait — a day after he said he was thinking about "winding down" the military operation and that the responsibility for policing Hormuz would fall to the countries reliant on shipping through the corridor.
Trump's mixed signals have left governments and markets scrambling. On Friday he posted: "We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East." Less than 24 hours later, he was threatening to obliterate Iran's entire power grid.
⚡ Iran's Power Plants: What Trump Is Threatening to Strike
Iran has about 110 gas plants, a small number of which are hybrid, according to data from OpenInfraMap. The country also operates solar, hydro, wind, oil, diesel, coal, geothermal and nuclear plants.
The biggest targets likely include:
- ⚡ Damavand Combined Cycle Power Plant: Located ~70 km southeast of downtown Tehran — output 2,868 MW
- ⚡ Shahid Salimi: Located in Mazandaran province near the Caspian Sea — output 2,215 MW
- ⚡ Shahid Rajai: Located ~110 km northeast of downtown Tehran — output 2,043 MW
Striking these plants would plunge millions of Iranian civilians into darkness — an act that would almost certainly be characterized internationally as a war crime targeting civilian infrastructure. The US has refrained from targeting Iran energy sites to date amid fears of such a step's impact on the global economy.
💣 Dimona Strike: Iran Hits Israeli Nuclear City
The Israeli military said it failed to intercept a missile before it struck Dimona, injuring several people and destroying a small building in the home of the country's nuclear program. Meanwhile in the south, officials declared a mass casualty event as missiles appeared to have pierced the defense array and hit Arad.
Israeli emergency services said they treated 47 people, including a 10-year-old boy in serious condition and a woman in moderate condition, both due to shrapnel wounds. The Negev Nuclear Research Center, which officially carries out only general scientific nuclear research, lies just outside Dimona.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was "aware of reports of an incident in the city of Dimona" but had "not received any indication of damage to the nuclear research center Negev."
In Arad, Israel's MDA service said 64 people were injured in an Iranian attack on the city of Arad in southern Israel.
🇬🇧 Diego Garcia Attacked — Iran Reaches 2,500 Miles
Tehran launched ballistic missiles at the joint US-UK military base in Diego Garcia — nearly 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) away from Iran. The base suffered no damage, according to a person familiar with the matter speaking on condition of anonymity, but the attack demonstrated a capability that goes beyond what Iran was known to have possessed.
Britain has not participated in U.S.-Israeli attacks but has allowed U.S. bombers to use its bases to attack Iran's missile sites. On Friday, the U.K. government said bombers could use Diego Garcia to attack sites used to target ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's targeting of Diego Garcia was almost certainly retaliation for that decision.
The UK denounced what it called "Iran's reckless attacks" after missiles were fired toward the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean.
⛽ Oil Hits $112 — The Highest Since 2014
International benchmark Brent futures closed at $112.19 on Friday — the highest level since 2014. Oil prices continued their upward march despite Trump's Jones Act waiver and other emergency measures.
Trump — who is facing increasing pressure at home to secure the strait as oil prices soar — issued the ultimatum in a social media post while he spent the weekend at his Florida home.
The oil price surge is feeding directly into consumer pain at the pump. National average gasoline prices have now risen more than 32% since the war began on February 28.
🚢 What's Happening at the Strait of Hormuz
The head of U.S. Central Command, Adm. Brad Cooper, asserted that Iran's ability to attack vessels on the strait had been "degraded." He said 5,000-pound (2,270-kilogram) bombs were dropped earlier in the week on an underground facility along Iran's coast used to store anti-ship cruise missiles and mobile missile launchers. The U.S. is deploying three more amphibious assault ships and roughly 2,500 additional Marines to the Middle East.
On Thursday, Reuters cited an Iranian lawmaker reporting that Iran is considering a proposal to levy transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a potential bid to monetize Tehran's newfound grip over the critical waterway through which a fifth of global oil and liquefied gas passes.
Japan separately reached out to Iran — Tehran has started talks with Tokyo about possibly opening the Strait, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Japanese news agency Kyodo News in a phone interview on Friday.
🌍 Gulf States Under Fire — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait
- 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia said it downed 20 drones in its east, home to major oil installations. Saudi Foreign Ministry warned more strikes will lead to further escalation.
- 🇦🇪 UAE: A missile alert sounded Saturday night in Dubai. UAE joined 21 other countries including the UK, Germany, France and Japan in expressing "readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage."
- 🇰🇼 Kuwait: Air defenses in Kuwait intercepted nine ballistic missiles and four drones that entered its airspace over the last 24 hours.
🇮🇱 Israel: Campaign at 'Halfway Stage'
Israel said strikes on Iran will "increase significantly" this week. IDF chief General Zamir told the media the Iran campaign is at the "halfway stage" — and that Iran's fire at Diego Garcia shows Europe is "within range."
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said Saturday that the joint campaign would intensify significantly, a day after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at the joint US-UK military base in Diego Garcia.
Israel also struck Iran's Natanz Nuclear Enrichment Facility — a site the U.S. had reportedly also targeted. The strike on sanctioned Malek Ashtar University came after the US reportedly hit Natanz.
🇮🇷 Iran's Response: 'We Will Target Energy and Desalination Infrastructure'
Iran fired back at Trump's power plant ultimatum almost immediately. In response, Iran says it will target energy and desalination infrastructure — a threat that could cut off fresh water supplies to Gulf states that depend almost entirely on desalination for their drinking water.
Iran's death toll in the war has now surpassed 1,500, the state broadcaster reported, citing the health ministry.
